What the drive looks like from the back seat
From the back seat it is farmland almost at once: the sheds at Shilat, then the pines of Ben Shemen, and by the time you notice aircraft crossing low overhead the car has traded Route 443 for Route 1 at the Ben Shemen interchange. That is 25 km in all, near enough 24 minutes when nothing is in the way. In the weekday rush a driver may leave the 443 alone altogether, cutting across to Route 431 to reach the terminals from the Lod side. Every car also stops at the airport gate for a security check, brief most of the year and slower before a holiday and through the summer peak. Settling up, and calling the ride off

Ask for a receipt or a tax invoice in the same message. What the meter is, and when it changes
Israeli taxis run on a meter, and the tariff it uses is decided by the clock rather than by the driver. Tariff 1 covers Sunday to Thursday from 06:00 to 21:00, and Friday and holiday eves until 16:00. Tariff 2 takes over at night, from 21:01 to 05:59, and on Friday afternoon between 16:00 and 21:00. Tariff 3 belongs to Thursday after 23:00, to Friday night, and to the hours once Shabbat or a holiday has ended. That is the whole reason a six in the morning pickup and a ten at night pickup over the same road are quoted differently, and the calculator applies the window that matches the hour you choose.
Landing at three in the morning
At that hour the terminal is at its emptiest: no crowd pressed against the barrier, no queue at the doors, and a short walk out to the car instead of a slalom around waiting families. The belt is the variable that matters more at night. We pin the pickup hour to it rather than to the landing time, because wheels down is only the moment the aircraft touches the runway, and a hold full of cases can keep you standing there long after it; the hour written into your confirmation allows for that stretch. A night arrival is also the one worth reserving furthest ahead. A slot taken weeks in advance is assigned to a driver who starts the night with your flight, so nothing rests on who happens to be free in the middle of the night.

Is the train from Modi'in Center a better idea than a taxi?
Sometimes. A solo traveler with hand luggage and time to spare will do fine on it. The airport station sits below the terminal, though, so every case goes down and comes back up, and you still have to reach Modi'in Center first. Add golf clubs, a stroller, or a grandparent who cannot manage stairs, and one car from the door is the shorter day.
Can you fit a car seat for children flying in with grandparents?

On a Friday afternoon, or at three in the morning, that is the difference between leaving and improvising.
